Chiropractic Care and Children
From the moment of conception, our bodies are growing and forming innately with only the help of mothers’ womb for protection and nutrition. As nine months go by, we are released into the world and we rely on immunity and protection from our mothers. But as we grow older, we start to build our own immunity, our own health. We then become toddlers and children, and then teenagers who get sick, but overcome that because our bodies become stronger and stronger. Then as we start to age, we are fed the lie that true health comes from either a pill, the product of our genes, and bad luck. This is the farthest thing from the truth.
We are living in an unprecedented time in history where people are addicted to prescription medications at rates unimaginable just a couple decades ago. As the rise of prescription medication use increases, so does the rate of disease in our world. The ironic thing is that many of these “diseases” can prevented or eliminated if managed naturally. The truth is we were born with everything we need to be healthy. And as the rise of medication usage goes up, so does the number of people looking for alternative approaches to their (and their children’s) health care. One alternative people are looking to is chiropractic care, which has helped adults and children for over one hundred years.
Some of us may think that babies and children don’t need to be adjusted because they haven’t had any physical stressors, or the famous “oh, they are young, they will bounce back with no problem.” Again, this is not true. Babies and children succumb to the stressors around them and show signs of dysfunction differently than many adults. For example, many babies that could benefit from chiropractic care suffer from chronic ear infections, trouble with latching or breast feeding, colic, reflux, and sleep disturbances. One of the reasons children can get these problems is due to spinal misalignments caused from birth or in-utero constraint that put pressure on the spinal nerves, decreasing the transmission of vital signals and impulses from the brain to the body, inhibiting the child’s body to work the way it is supposed to.
These spinal subluxations can also inhibit the way our children grow and develop, from in-utero to adulthood when their growth plates close. In utero constraint or being stuck in one position for weeks to months, can create problems like plagiocephaly and torticollis. It can also cause problems for kids hitting and reaching their developmental milestones. Then when kids start to hit these milestones, like crawling and walking, they trip, fall, and stumble a lot. Although this is normal for children, these physical stressors, although small but frequent, can create even more spinal misalignments, now furthering negative impact on the nervous system and decreasing the health of our children.
Inevitably, babies turn into toddlers, toddlers turn into children and soon they turn into young adults. From falls on the playground, carrying backpacks, reading books for hours and sitting on phones and tablets, sports injuries, you name it; there are hundreds of ways that our children are developing these abnormal postures and spinal misalignments. Therefore, it is vital that every single child should be seen by a trained chiropractor, to assess and correct these spinal subluxations, to allow proper nervous system function. We do not need outside sources, like medication to have ‘health.’ True health is not something that we obtain by outside sources or automatically have (or not have) from our genes, it is something that we already have from the beginning and it is the things we do on an everyday basis that determines if we keep our health.
If we can teach our children what It means to truly be healthy, then maybe we can reverse the fact that more kids (and adults) are being put on prescription medication, that more and more people are dying from sickness and diseases that could have been prevented had they known the truth about what it means to be healthy. The health of a child determines their health for the rest of their life. “Children are the world’s most valuable resource, and its best hope for the future”- JFK.
