Making Your Health Your #1 Goal for the New Year

It’s that time again. The time when everyone feels like the start of a new year is the perfect time to set and accomplish some new goals. It’s the time when the holidays known for their great feasts have ended and a new calendar year has begun. It’s the time when people feel their unhealthy eating was justified due to the holidays.

We recently started 2018 and many people are thinking of new year’s resolutions. Many of which are focused on losing weight, getting into shape, becoming more healthy, buying a house, starting or finishing school or getting a new job just to name a few. At Modern Chiropractic Center here in Boise, we can help many people achieve some of those goals.

The first steps in achieving any goals are to create SMART goals. SMART is an acronym used in helping people remember the best way to set and achieve new goals.

To help you understand how to make a SMART goal let’s say our goal is: I want to lose weight.

S: Specific. Be specific when you make a goal. If you are specific your goal has a better chance of being successful. To help you get started let’s look at these basic questions.

*Who:      Who is this goal about?

*What:     What is the end product I want to have?

*Where:   Does this goal have a specific location?

*When:    When? How long until you want to reach your goal? 1 year, 1 month, a few days?

*Why:      Why is this goal important to you?

M: Measurable. I want to lose weight. Is this measurable? Yes, but how much weight? We need to be specific. I want to lose 20 pounds. Not only should we be specific about the measure of our goal, but also about the timeline of our goal. Measuring your progress will keep your goal fresh in your mind. Pick a time and measure your progress often. I will measure my weight once a week to track my progress. Great! This will help you stay on track.

Some questions to ask your-self are:

How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?

A: Attainable. Is your goal attainable? Your goal should be important to you. If it is important to you then you will look for ways to make it come true no matter what. Do not let attitudes, abilities, skills, or finances get in your way. You can do anything you set your mind to.

R: Realistic. If you goal is realistic then you willing and able to do what it takes to make it a reality. You can dream as big as you want, don’t let anyone tell you your goal is to big. Only you can know if your goal is to big. Sometimes big dreams are easier to come by because we want them more and try harder to make it happen. Once you have decided if your goal is realistic you need to make a plan.

To achieve my goal of losing 20 pounds I will cut back on carbs and sugar and exercise 3 days a week.

T: Timely. Choosing a time frame for your goal is VITAL. A goal should always be accompanied by a time frame. If you do not have a time by which you want your goal to be accomplished there is no need to work on it now. Mind a well not have a goal. “The diet starts tomorrow”. We have all said that. We need to decide when our goals start and when we want to have them accomplished by.

I want to lose 20 pounds by Easter. I am going to diet and exercise 3 days a week. I am going to measure my progress 1 time a week.

Is this goal Specific?

Is this goal Measurable?

Is this goal Attainable?

Is this goal Realistic?

Is this goal Timely?
