chiropractic neck pain treatment

If you are experiencing neck pain, you are not alone. Over 65% of Boise area residents get neck pain. The cervical spine is made up of bones, joints, and muscles and its primary function is to protect the spinal cord and spinal nerves. It is designed for strength and stability, so nerve communication can be optimized between the brain and the body. When the spine is misaligned, or “subluxated”, abnormal pressure can occur on the joints and cause pain. These same misalignments also cause abnormal communication between the brain and the body.

These neck problems often cause symptoms such as pain (in the neck, head or shoulders), limited range of motion, tenderness, numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers, weakness in grip strength, coldness in the hands, etc. Neck misalignments can come from several sources:

  • Either injury to or abnormal function of soft tissues such as muscles, tendons or ligaments;
  • Structural problems such as a reversed curvature or a scoliosis causing compression of discs and joints;
  • from a neurological origin, such as a pinched nerve, spinal cord problem or even abnormal functioning of the brain.

Once our doctors determine the underlying cause of your neck pain, we will recommend a unique treatment plan based on your goals. Corrective methods will usually include spinal adjustments, postural exercises, and spinal traction. We also always give patients specific and tailored exercises and stretches to use at home, as well as recommendations on factors that make your neck posture and pain worse, from sleeping position and pillows, to computer and work ergonomics. Together these will work to correct the unique cause of your pain and prevent it from returning
