TMJ chiropractic treatment

There are many different problems that can cause pain, clicking or popping in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). When these symptoms are present in the TMJ and it is causing a disruption of normal function (chewing, taking, etc.) it is called temporomandibular Disorder, or TMD. TMD can arise from a sudden injury either directly to the jaw or to the head or neck, such as a whiplash-type of trauma. Once the TMJ is producing symptoms it is difficult for the joint to heal due to constant use with talking, laughing, eating, etc.

Research has also shown alignment of the neck and head (posture) has a major effect on the function of the TMJ and can aggravate the symptoms of TMD. If there is no history of trauma, it is possible for TMD to start due to abnormal head and neck posture. Forward Head Posture is a common cause, but people with scoliosis of the spine where the spine is extremely “crooked” from the front can also develop jaw-related problems.

At mc2, we look for the cause of the problem and work to correct the cause. If the TMJ has become misaligned from a sudden trauma or from long-standing poor posture, we combine adjustments of the jaw, along with corrective exercises and traction for the cervical spine and head alignment.
