The foundation of chiropractic practice is the spinal adjustment. Most spinal adjustments improve range of motion and reduce pain. However, very few adjustment techniques have ever been shown to improve spine alignment.
At Modern Chiropractic Center – mc2, we utilize a combination of those methods most effective for range of motion and pain relief, but we also incorporate unique Mirror-Image® adjustment methods. Research has shown that these unique spinal adjustments, when used in combination with Mirror-Image® exercises and spinal traction, obtain significant improvement in the alignment of the spine and posture.
Independently conducted and published research (randomized clinical trials) have shown that these improvements from Chiropractic Biophysics® care last over a year and are associated with long-lasting pain relief, improved neurological function and improvement in health and quality of life. These research studies are specifically on Chiropractic Biophysics® technique, not traditional chiropractic care. Dr. Betz is the Vice-President of Chiropractic Biophysics® Nonprofit, a spine research foundation.
According to the Association of Chiropractic Colleges:
“Chiropractic is a health care discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.”
The foundation of chiropractic practice is spinal adjustment. A chiropractic spinal adjustment is traditionally described as the application of a precise force to a specific part of the spine enabling normal nerve transmission and assisting the body to recuperate and heal on its own. There are many different “types” of chiropractic adjustments, also called “techniques”. There are low-force methods where no “audible” noise is heard such as instrument-assisted methods or using a “drop table” to assist the spinal adjustment. And then there are more traditional adjustments where an “audible” noise (popping sound) is heard from the joint as the spine is precisely positioned and the joint is pushed to either realign it or improve its range of motion. We use a combination of these methods based on what we believe may work best, as well as a patient’s preference.
There have been nearly 100 Randomized Clinical Trials demonstrating the effectiveness of the chiropractic adjustment for patients suffering with low back pain, and nearly another 100 on headaches, neck pain, cervicobrachial (neck and arm) pain, and/or upper back pain. The research is astoundingly in support of chiropractic adjustments helping patients with short-term pain relief. However, very few spinal adjustment techniques have ever been shown in clinical trials to improve spine position (structure), as measured on X-rays, before and after treatment.
At Modern Chiropractic Center – mc2, we utilize a combination of those methods most effective for range of motion and pain relief, but we also incorporate unique and different Mirror-Image® adjustment methods. Research has shown that these unique spinal adjustments, when used in combination with Mirror-Image® exercises and spinal traction, obtain significant improvement in the alignment of the spine and posture. In randomized clinical trials comparing physical therapy and these corrective Mirror-Image® methods, it has been shown that there is longer lasting resolution of pain when the spinal structure and posture is improved (on before and after-treatment X-rays), versus just achieving temporary relief with various physical therapy methods. Basically, STRUCTURE DICTATES FUNCTION.
Also of extreme importance is when the spine is misaligned, it has the potential to impact the function the nervous system. The nervous system regulates the function of nearly every function in the body. Many “health problems” can therefore show improvement when the nervous system function improves through improvement of spinal structure. Published research studies have shown CBP® corrective care to help patients with headaches, post-whiplash syndrome, scoliosis and even problems such as childhood ear infections, ADHD, asthma, colic, constipation, and much more. See the end of this article for a comprehensive list of studies published on CBP® technique.
These research studies are on Chiropractic Biophysics® technique, or CBP® for short. These independently conducted and published research studies have shown that these improvements from CBP® care last over a year and are associated with long-lasting pain relief and improvement in quality of life. Our Clinic Director, Dr. Joe Betz, is the Vice-President of CBP® NonProfit, a spinal research foundation dedicated to studying the impact of spinal correction on health and function in patients.
