kinesiology taping

Have you ever seen professional or Olympic athletes on TV with those colorful strips of tape spread across shoulders, knees, backs, or legs? That is not “traditional athletic” tape; it is called kinesiology tape. It is traditionally used as a therapeutic tape that is applied according to different patterns having unique goals including providing increased support, reducing pain, reducing swelling, and improving performance. At our Modern Chiropractic Centers, we also use kinesiology tape to help improve posture, spine alignment and even scoliosis.

How Does this Kinesiology Tape Work?

Kinesiology Tape is really “stretchy”. It is not restrictive regarding movement and activity. Therefore, athletes can wear it and still perform and move without restriction of motion. There are several theories why kinesiology tape has such an amazing impact for so many people. One theory is that it gently lifts the skin, or perhaps provides slight shear force on the skin, separating it from the fascial tissues below. This could have the beneficial effects such as reduced pain and irritation during movement.

Some studies have shown that when the tape is applied across joints is slightly increases the joint space, perhaps allowing for increased movement of the joints. Although the increases are very small, perhaps the change in space is enough for the joints to function with less pain and irritation.

Others believe the tape alters the sensory input from the skin, fascia, muscles, and joints that is sent to the brain where pain and joint position sense is organized. This in turn alters the information form the brain sent to the muscles and may improve performance in this way.

Tape is also thought to affect circulation and inflammation or bruising. Improvement in lymphatic drainage is also proposed as an effect of properly applied kinesiology tape.

When applied in certain patterns, with patients who have abnormal postural patters or spinal misalignment, kinesiology tape is thought to gently remind a patient’s body where they should be positioned. Essentially when we use kinesiology tape in this manner patients can leave the office and have the tape reminding their body to sit or stand straighter.

There are many proposed uses for kinesiology tape. At our Modern Chiropractic Centers, we understand the differences in the patterns used and when and how to apply the tape to best meet the needs of each individual patient.
