Pediatric and Chiropractic Care

Do kids need chiropractic care? Absolutely! In fact, newborn babies often get their first subluxation through the birthing process, which may be very traumatic on an infant’s spine.

Many people believe chiropractors only help adults, but children also benefit from regular chiropractic care.

At Modern Chiropractic Center in Boise and Nampa, we specialize in providing gentle chiropractic care for infants, children and teenagers. Chiropractic adjustments help to ensure proper brain balance and development improving your child’s overall health and ensuring that they have the best chance of reaching their full potential. We are trained to work with children – always adapting the treatment to fit the special needs of their young patients.

When the brain and body can communicate well, kids can adapt to their surroundings better. Adapting is the key word and why chiropractic is so helpful to kids. Although bumps and falls are often what comes to mind with our kids when we think of physical stress, actual stressors start much earlier- during the prenatal or birthing process. In addition to physical stressors, our kids live in a busier, more complex world than we did. Simply put, we have more coming from every direction. All combined, it can be overwhelming! The more ‘stressors’ that build up, the harder it is for our bodies to adapt to them.

Chiropractic allows your child to increase their potential for optimal health and wellness!

Why Chiropractic Care for Children?

Children experience trauma at birth that may negatively affect their body and nervous system. Even during a natural birth or cesarean birth, an enormous amount of pressure is put on the infant’s head and spine. Added interventions, such as pulling, twisting, forceps and suction all cause further stress on the baby’s delicate spine and often resulting in baby’s first misalignments.

In a study of 1250 newborn babies, it was demonstrated that only 10% have a healthy, freely-movable cranial mechanism.1,2,3 In other words, all of the bones of the head are in correct relationship and are moving as they should. Only 10% have visible disturbances in the cranial mechanism. The remaining 80% have minor difficulties that can only be detected by those specifically trained to detect subluxations or misalignments such as chiropractors.

In a few studies, it was shown that maneuvers and forces such as pulling, twisting, forceps and suction acting on the infant’s spine and head during the birthing process may cause abnormal biomechanics, abnormal muscular and neurological function.4 This may present with dysregulation of brainstem and motor regulatory systems. 5

These subluxations that occur in infancy continue to affect the spine’s development and may lead to degeneration throughout their childhood and adulthood. As a child develops and becomes more active, further misalignments can result from normal play, bumps and falls.

Later childhood activities like learning to walk, participating in sports or riding a bicycle can also cause spinal health problems or make underlying conditions worse. Even if an injury appears minor such as a fall off of a bicycle, damage may have occurred to other parts of the body such as the pelvis, spine, skull or limbs. This damage cannot be detected without a proper spinal check-up. The doctors at Modern Chiropractic Center in Boise and Nampa are uniquely trained to identify problems in these areas in babies and kids.

What is the Assessment like for Pediatrics?

Pediatric care begins with a thorough health history which includes birth history, range of motion and exam studies, milestone checks to see if baby milestones reached adulthood milestones, and posture readings.

How Different are the Adjustments from Adults to Babies and Kids?

Adjustments are different from babies to kids to adults. The amount of pressure that we use to adjust a baby is about the same as feeling for the pressure of an avocado or the ripeness of a tomato. Another way is if you put pressure on your eyes with a finger, right when you feel the slightest pressure is how much pressure we use on a baby- even less than that! With kids, we use highly-skills adjustments that adults receive (instrumental, drops, hands-on), but it is tailored to be gentle and suitable to the age of the child.

When is the Best Time to Bring in Your Baby, Child, Teenager?

A child’s spine grows 50% in the first year of life. At no other time does your growth happen so rapidly which is why it is so important that your baby is in proper alignment ensuring proper symmetrical growth. Making sure your child develops with the proper spinal curves will allow for optimal movement, balance, upright posture, protection and shock absorption. Just as you would have your child’s teeth cleaned and eyes checked, it is important for your child to have regular chiropractic adjustments throughout their development. The best time to bring in your baby, child, teenager is as early as possible!

Has your doctor recently checked if:

  1. Your child’s baby milestones graduated into adult milestones?
  2. Your child’s posture is healthy?
  3. Your child is actively moving and playing?
  4. Your child is developing at the right timeline for their body?
