Chiropractic Care and Shoulder Pain
Do you suffer with shoulder pain? Shoulder pain is a very common reason why people come into the chiropractor as it can impair a person’s ability to do everyday tasks. These tasks can be as small as getting dressed or not being able to do one’s job. Or maybe you don’t have pain, but instead a lack of mobility, which stops you from playing ball with your kids. Either way, the doctors at Modern Chiropractic want to help you find the cause of your pain.
There are many reasons for shoulder pain such as:
- Subluxation of the glenohumeral joint
- Chronic tear of the rotator cuff from old injuries
- New injuries like a labrum tear
- Repetitive use injuries
- Arthritis
- AC joint separation
- Tendinitis
- Bursitis
- Muscle strains
- Frozen shoulder
- Loss of the cervical curve
- Increase of the thoracic curvature
Having proper alignment of the cervical spine helps protect the spinal discs and nerves that supply the necessary nerve energy flow to the shoulder and the surrounding soft tissues. Having a healthy neck curve also supports the rotator cuff by adding tensile strength to the shoulder girdle in the way the soft tissues attach to the neck and upper thoracic spine.
Also when someone does not have a healthy thoracic spine, for example, if someone has hyperkyphosis (or too much thoracic curvature), it changes the biomechanics of the entire rotator cuff, which can inhibit proper motion of the joint. This can lead to chronic wear and tear injuries and increase the risk of them.
The doctors at Modern Chiropractic are trained in identifying the cause of your shoulder pain. The doctors will start with a postural assessment, shoulder orthopedic testing, range of motion testing and muscle strength tests to begin the assessment process. Depending on the kind of shoulder pain someone has, it may warrant the use of spinal and shoulder joint x-rays to help determine the final cause of the pain, OR what caused the chronic problem in the first place. Sometimes MRI are necessary to order to assess certain soft tissues. After the complete assessment, the team at Modern Chiropractic will help immediately improve your pain with the use of:
- Spinal and extremity adjustments
- Trigger point therapy and massage therapy
- Traction of the cervical or thoracic spine • Kinesiology Taping to help improve posture, reinforce stability and decrease pain
- Rehabilitative exercises to improve posture as well as strengthen the spine and rotator cuff
